National Health Policy Forum

Public Health

Public Health can be broadly defined as what a society does collectively to assure the conditions in which people can be healthy. Narrower definitions may focus on the health infrastructure and activities of governments (federal, state, and local); on the subspecialty of medicine concerned primarily with community or population health; on the agencies charged with protecting and promoting the health of the public, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC); or on publicly financed health programs and services, such as Medicaid and grant programs supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

The Forum’s public health programming fits mostly within the broad definition of public health, encompassing topics as diverse as preparedness to respond to health threats, such as pandemic flu and bioterrorism; the social and environmental determinants of health; major health problems such as tobacco use, asthma, and obesity; global health; public health programs, such as vaccinations and Ryan White; and research on and evaluation of health efforts.
