Summary: By early 2001, more than one-half of the states had established some type of pharmaceutical assistance programs for the elderly. This issue brief considers specific program parameters, such as eligibility criteria, cost-sharing arrangements, program administration, and marketing and outreach. It also considers programs in the broader context of a future Medicare outpatient prescription drug benefit.
