Charles Alfero, MA, is the executive director of the Hidalgo Medical Services (HMS) – Center for Health Innovation (CHI) and the founder of HMS a Community Health Center providing primary medical, dental, mental health, family support, community development, and health policy services in southwestern New Mexico. He has over 34 years of experience in rural health policy, systems, and program development. He has been director of rural outreach for the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center and director of the Community Health Services Division in the New Mexico Department of Health. Has either developed or assured the continuation of hospital, primary care, and related service delivery systems in numerous communities in New Mexico. He is also the director of the National Center for Frontier Communities and is on the board of directors of the National Rural Health Association and New Mexico Health Connections, a nonprofit health insurance co-op, among others.
CHI is a research, development and policy division of HMS and is working in 23 states on a variety of rural health workforce, public health improvements, integrated services and community/university collaborations.
