Jim Mathews, PhD, is the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC’s) deputy director. Dr. Mathews came to MedPAC in the spring of 2007 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where he served as the senior career official in the Office of Health Policy under the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation. He has held a variety of management and analytic positions throughout his career in health care policy, having served at the U.S. Government Accountability Office, the Prospective Payment Assessment Commission (one of MedPAC’s predecessor commissions), the Office of Management and Budget, and the Health Care Financing Administration (now CMS, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services). He earned his bachelor’s, master's, and doctorate degrees at the University of Chicago.
