Sarah A. Lister, DVM, MPH, is a specialist in public health and epidemiology with the Congressional Research Service, a federal legislative branch support agency. She came to Capitol Hill as an AAAS Congressional Science Fellow in 1997, sponsored by the American Veterinary Medical Association, and worked on food safety issues for the Senate Committee on Agriculture.
She has served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, working for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service. In addition, she has worked on issues of public health infrastructure and emergency preparedness for two public health professional associations in Washington, DC.
Dr. Lister began her career as a practicing veterinarian. She holds BS and doctor of veterinary medicine degrees from Cornell University and a master's degree in public health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is board-certified in veterinary preventive medicine.
