Susan K. Thompson, MS, is president and chief executive officer of UnityPoint Health – Fort Dodge. Located in northwest Iowa, UnityPoint Health – Fort Dodge serves an eight county region with a predominately rural and aging population.
UnityPoint Health – Fort Dodge is one of nine senior affiliates of UnityPoint Health, one of the nation’s most integrated health systems. Through relationships with more than 280 physician clinics, 31 hospitals in metropolitan and rural communities, and home care services throughout its nine regions, UnityPoint Health includes more than 24,000 employees and provides care throughout Iowa, Central and Western Illinois, and Central Wisconsin. UnityPoint Health Partners is the nation’s 4th largest Accountable Care Organization, with over 250,000 covered lives under value-based contracts.
Previous to assuming her role as president and chief executive officer in 2010, Ms. Thompson served as chief operating officer for the UnityPoint Health – Fort Dodge region where she has worked since 1989. Ms. Thompson’s 35 years of experience in health care include a background of performance improvement, health care reengineering, and clinical nursing roles. Her passion for improving the quality of health and the delivery of health care to rural America has afforded her opportunities to present her experiences with the University of Iowa College of Public Health, the Rural Policy and Research Institute, the Advisory Board, the Iowa Hospital Association, and the Nebraska Hospital Association.
She received her master of science degree in health services management from Clarkson College in Omaha, Nebraska, where she was named the Roger Watkins Memorial – Outstanding Master of Science in Health Services Management Graduate.
