Thomas R. Mullen, MA, was appointed president and chief executive officer of Mercy Health Services (MHS) and Mercy Medical Center on July 1, 1999. Mr. Mullen joined Mercy in 1991 as a senior vice president. In September 1995 he assumed the role of executive vice president chief financial officer for financial services. He had previously served as vice president for finance for the University of Maryland Medical System Corporation from 1984 to 1991. Mr. Mullen has also held positions in health care finance and administration including KPMG Peat Markwick (1978-1980) and Montgomery General Hospital (1980-1984).
Mr. Mullen serves on the MHS Board and on the Board of Mercy Ridge. Mr. Mullen was appointed and currently serves as a commissioner on the Health Services Cost Review Commission in Maryland. Additionally, Mr. Mullen serves on the Board of the Maryland Catholic Conference and is a member of M&T Bank’s Greater Baltimore/Washington Directors Advisory Council. He is currently a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
Mr. Mullen has previously served on various Maryland Hospital Association committees: Finance (chairman), Executive (treasurer) and Nominating (chairman).
Mr. Mullen received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maryland in 1978 and a master’s degree in finance from Loyola College in 1986.
