Christopher Hogan, PhD, is president of Direct Research, LLC, a small health services research consulting firm located in Vienna, Virginia. Currently in his thirteenth year in this position, Dr. Hogan offers hands-on, data-based analysis of complex health care issues to clients ranging from Fortune 500 businesses and government agencies to professional societies and advocacy organizations. Previously, Dr. Hogan spent nine years on the staff of the Physician Payment Review Commission (PPRC) and the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), federal legislative-branch agencies that advise the Congress on Medicare payment and policy issues. At PPRC/MedPAC, he was the principal analyst for several issues, including Medicare beneficiaries' access to physician care, the "gap" between Medicare's physician fees and those paid by the average private insurer, risk selection and risk adjustment in the Medicare Advantage program, claims-based indicators of quality of care, and care at the end of life. Dr. Hogan was once a service fellow at the National Center for Health Services Research (now AHRQ, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality), and holds a PhD degree in economics from Northwestern University and a BA degree in mathematics from the University of Virginia.
